                                                                        NARRATIVE TEXT


Narrative text is a text that has function to entertain or to amuse people with a story. The examples of this kind of text are legend, folktale, folklore, myth, short stories, science fictions, and novels. To make the story interesting, the story must give attention on the generic structures. They are the orientation, the complication, and the resolution.

The orientation is the introduction of the story in which it introduces the characters, the habits of the characters and the setting or where the story is taken place.

The complication is the situation when the characters face the problems.

The resolution is the way the characters solve the problem.

The popular legends from Indonesia are like Malin Kundang, Tanguban Perahu, Loro Jonggrang, Toba Lake Cinderella, Rapunzel, and many others.

 An example of narrative text :

Cinderella

Once upon a time there was a girl called Cinderella. She lived with her stepsisters and stepmother. They treated her badly. She had to do all house works.

One day an invitation to the ball came to the family but her stepsisters would not let her go. Cinderella was sad. The stepsisters went to the ball without her.

Fortunately, the fairy godmother came and helped her to get to the ball. At the ball, Cinderella danced with the prince. The prince fell in love with her and then married her. They lived happily ever after.




                                                                      REPORT TEXT

 Report text is a text which reports about general description of the subject. It is a result of systematic observation and analysis.

Report text has social functions (communicative purposes) to describe the way things they are or things in general. Things are like a range of natural, man made, and social-phenomena in our environment.

The language features (unsur-unsur bahasa yang sering digunakan dalam teks report) yaitu
1. Using general nouns, an object of a general nature.
2. Using linking verbs: is, am, are, seem, look, taste, etc.
3. Using action verbs : fly, swim, see, smell, walk, hang, breathe, etc.
4. Using timeless present tense (adverbs of frequency)  to indicate usualness : usually, always, often, etc.
5. Using technical terms : music, weather, etc.
6. Using paragraphs with topic sentences to organize the information: repeated naming of the topic as the beginning focus of the clause.
7. Using simple present tense.

The generic structure of report text :
1. General classification : to tell the definition of the object or phenomenon.
2. Description : to tell what the object or phenomenon is like (parts, qualities, habits or behaviors, uses, advantages, etc).

An example of report text :

Elephants


Elephants are the largest mammals in the world.

Although they have huge bodies and great power, their movements are smooth and gentle.

Newly born elephants usually have thick hair all over their body. When they grow up the hair becomes sparser. Adult elephants have almost no hair.

A female elephant carries her unborn young for about  20 to 22 months. Within an hour of birth, the baby elephant can stand on its own feet. The baby elephant is usually about one meter high and weighs about one hundred kilogram.
